11.
Access to the river

Saltpan's
PLEASE NOTE that unfortunately there will be NO ACCESS to the river above Saltpan’s BEFORE THURSDAY. The reason for this is that, due to construction, there will be blasting at an open quarry and therefore this is NOT A SAFE AREA. This area will be controlled by security personnel at the request of the Water Affairs and therefore it will be a waste of your time and effort to even venture to the dam before Thursday. You will however be able to trip from Saltpan’s to Cradock.

Tripping
THURSDAY tripping will be as normal – from 10am – 4.30pm – and entry will be through the usual gate below the dam and NOT through Norman Collett’s gate as printed on the entry form.

Double Trouble
ACCESS TO DOUBLE TROUBLE will be allowed via a secondary road along the road to Toastrack. This will be clearly marked. PLEASE DO NOT go beyond the hazard tape and REMEMBER TO RESPECT the property of the landowner. A vantage point for spectators will be created on the river bank at the bottom of the second chute. Spectators must be vigilant and not get in the way of the contestants.

Keith's Flyover and Toaststrack
ONLY ON THURSDAY 10h00 – 16h30 & FRIDAY DURING THE EVENT. THIS IS ALLOWED UNDER STRICT CONDITIONS – IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT YOU CHECK THESE RULES BEFORE GOING TO KEITH’S - SEE WEBSITE AND ROAD MAP IN REGISTRATION PACK FOR DETAILS.

15. The route
The Marathon would not be possible were it not for the co-operation and kindness of the riparian farmers along the river. It is your duty as participants, seconds, spectators and canoeing enthusiasts that this goodwill be maintained through your action and behaviour.  It is imperative that the paddlers and PARTICULARLY their seconds adhere to these rules required by the landowners as this will ensure a trouble-free arrangement and long-standing access to Keith’s. Please be considerate to the farmers and the marathon committee by co-operating with these requests. The inconsiderate behaviour of canoeists/seconds in previous years has resulted in many unpleasant confrontations.

FIRST DAY BY ROAD:
FOLLOW THE YELLOW AND BLACK ROAD SIGNS ALONG THE ROUTE.

The start is from the East bank of the
Grassridge Dam (1) at 7h00. Allow 1½ hours for travelling, preparation and checking in. To get to Toastrack Bridge (4) in time, seconds should leave straight after the start. Please note that the road is on private property and this is a ONE-WAY road to Toastrack (4) and Keith’s Flyover (5) crossing over Keith’s Bridge and following the left bank of the river, exiting at Saltpan’s Bridge. This road has speed bumps and is accessible to BAKKIES and 4x4’s ONLY – NO TRAILERS. PLEASE USE DESIGNATED PARKING AND DO NOT PARK ON OR NEXT TO THE BRIDGE. This road will only be open on THURSDAY 30 SEPTEMBER 10h00 – 16h30 & FRIDAY 1 OCTOBER DURING THE EVENT. Access to Double Trouble will be clearly marked on the road to Toastrack.

Permission was granted on the provison that people using the road would adhere to certain conditions:
* ONLY ONE-WAY TRAFFIC IS ALLOWED, ONCE YOU GO TO TOASTRACK, YOU MUST CARRY ON TO SALTPAN’S BRIDGE.
* Spectators at Double Trouble are NOT TO GO beyond the hazard tape and are to respect the property of the farmer.
* NO VEHICLES STOPPING ON BRIDGES. Canoeists portaging Keith's will be crossing the flow of traffic at the bridge.
* NO SPECTATORS STANDING ON KEITH’S BRIDGE, VEHICLES CROSS OVER THE BRIDGE.
* DON’T LITTER & DON’T DRIVE OVER THE VELD, ANYONE RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY DAMAGE WILL BE HELD LIABLE.
* USE THE ROAD AT YOUR OWN RISK, THE FARMERS & MARATHON HAVE TOTAL INDEMNITY FROM ANY CLAIMS.
* SHOULD THERE BE HEAVY RAIN, THE ROAD WILL BE CLOSED.
The continued use of this road is dependent on adherence to the above.

At
Saltpan’s Bridge (10) there is an exciting series of rapids. The leading boats should be there about 1:45 hours from the start. Parking area has been made here, NO PARKING WITHIN 50m of Saltpan’s Bridge on the main road. PLEASE DO NOT crowd Saltpan’s Bridge, this is a safety hazard. If requested by officials to move, please do so. Follow the signs to Katkop Weir (11), but please don’t park where the paddlers portage. This is followed by Glen Alpha (12) and then the Finish (13) 1 km below Knutsford Bridge where refreshments and food can be bought. This is a one way down road.

NB: Please follow the arrows to the designated parking area at KNUTSFORD FINISH, just above the take-out & 24 hr boat camp. Parking on the left is for OFFICIALS ONLY. If parking on the river bank is full, you will be directed to parking at the main entrance gate.

SECOND DAY BY ROAD:
FOLLOW THE YELLOW AND BLACK ROAD SIGNS ALONG THE ROUTE.

The start is at
7h00. Allow 1¼ hours for travelling, preparation and checking in.

After the start at Knutsford, seconds must take the ONE WAY road next to the railway line to
Reveille Bridge (15) or Baroda Bridge (16). Reveille Bridge is close to the start, so, if going there, leave well before the start.

Longacre Bridge (17) is an excellent vantage point with an elevated view upstream and downstream. To proceed to Longacre Bridge, cross over the Baroda Bridge and follow the signs. From Longacre Bridge you go to Gauging Weir (18) on the farm Waaikraal. PLEASE FOLLOW THE SIGNS AND DON’T PARK IN THE LUCERNE! Then proceed in the direction of Cradock and follow the signs for Marlow Chute (20). Follow the Hofmeyr tar road towards Cradock to get to Cradock Weir (21). The speed limit on the tar road will be 60km/h. The bridge at Cradock Weir will be closed to traffic – no access for vehicles, spectators only, park off the road. Continue with the tar road into Cradock to the Finish at the Sports Complex.

Entry fee for non-paddlers at the Sport Complex on Day 2 until 14h00: R10 per adult & R5 per child under 12.
Entry fee for Hansa Fish Music Festival on Friday & Saturday night : R40 per adult & R20 per child under 12.
PLEASE DO NOT pay the entry fee for vagrants, this creates a security problem.

KEEP VEHICLES LOCKED AT ALL TIMES AND LOCK VALUABLES IN THE TRUNK. DON’T LEAVE VALUABLES IN TENTS AND VEHICLES THIS CREATES UNNECCESARY TEMPTATION FOR THEFT.
