IMPORTANT!
The moving
of the Pre-Fish date to its original weekend of mid-September
resulted that we are not able to access the Grassridge Dam area at
all due to construction work. Louis is in discussions with the
farmer to gain access to the upper part of the river below
Grassridge Dam by means of private farm roads, not usually
accessible during the Fish.
The Pre-Fish will
not start at Grassridge, but downstream of it. The exact details of
where and how to get there will be posted here and our club (www.fishrivercanoeclub.com)
by lunch time on Thursday. Details will also be available from the
Club on Friday evening. Paddlers can call Philip de Wet on 082 378
4333 for information.
The race will start downstream of Double Trouble – but don’t worry,
you will be given the opportunity to shoot Double Trouble before the
race starts.
Take the normal route towards Grassridge Dam. Turn left
approximately 2.7km before the Grassridge turn-off on the private
road of Mr Norman Collett. Follow the signs to Collett Weir and find
some parking.
Norman has asked very nicely that we keep away from his newly
constructed hydro plant. He is helping us out so please stay away
from the plant. Without his assistance we would have started at
Prospect – no Keith’s and no Double Trouble.
Please see the map on our website for more detailed directions.

Every year
we stage a Pre-Fish two day race over exactly the same course as the
Hansa Fish, at the same water level that is planned for the
marathon with the exception of:
• The paddle will be straight across the dam and not around the buoy.
• Cradock Weir will be a compulsory portage.
• The finish on Day 2 is at the Cradock Canoe Club take-out.
*Please note
- the date for the Pre-Fish because it is not the usual 2 weeks
prior to the Hansa Fish. Some of the paddlers have entered for the
Karoo to Coast mountain bike race which takes place on the 25th of
September, therefore we will be hosting the Pre-Fish 3 weeks prior
to the Hansa Fish. The Pre-Fish will now be on Saturday and Sunday,
the 17th and 18th of September 2011.
There will be 26 cumecs of water in the river and life savers will
be on duty. The recent floods in the Brak and the Fish Rivers have
caused quite a number of flow changes and the Pre-Fish is therefore
a great opportunity to check out the new lines.
It's
a fantastic chance to recce the river and get to know its intricacies
at precisely the same conditions that you enjoy during the marathon
two weeks later.
It is a casual fun affair that ends at the Fish River Canoe marathon
clubhouse.
